How To Prepare Yourself

Physical and mental fitness is essential as you will be travelling to a region of high altitude and extreme weather conditions. To make the most of this program, you should start an exercise regime and develop a walking habit, at least a month prior to the trip. We strongly recommend daily brisk walking or jogging for 5 km or 3 miles.

Precautions At High Altitude

It is very essential to acclimatize well for high altitude to remain healthy and ensure a comfortable journey. Lack of oxygen at high altitudes (over 2,500 m) affects most people to some extent. With an increase in altitude, the human body needs time to develop physiological mechanisms to cope with decreased oxygen levels. This process is called acclimatization.

To acclimatize well, we recommend the following:

  • Diamox (Acetazolamide) is proven to be the most effective way to counter High Altitude Sickness.
  • It is important that you start taking this tablet 5 days before arriving in Kathmandu. Please see your doctor for a prescription.
  • If you have an allergy to sulfa drugs, please inform your coordinator to discuss an alternative option.
  • A qualified doctor will accompany the group to provide medical care and support.

Communication

Wi-Fi will be available in Kathmandu and as we make our way to the more remote areas of Tibet, the connectivity will become limited. Kindly make the necessary arrangement so that you can be on this journey with a focus on turning inward.

Currency

The currency used in Nepal is Nepalese Rupees and Indian Rupees, and in Tibet is Chinese Yuan. You can only use 100 and smaller Indian rupee notes in Nepal. Higher denomination rupee notes are illegal to use. US Dollars and all other major currencies can be converted to Chinese Yuan or Nepalese rupees. You can either do the conversion at any international airport or we can assist you with this in Kathmandu.

The unit of Chinese currency is the Yuan. Approximately USD 1 = 6.00 Yuan, and 1 Yuan = NPR 17.00. Money can be exchanged at the Nepal–Tibet Border. You can re-exchange all your remaining Yuan at the end of the trip at the border before re-entering Nepal.

Itinerary

The itinerary for each group may vary slightly depending upon several factors. The hotel where the group will stay in Kathmandu will be informed at a later date. Sometimes due to last minute changes in the government rules, airline schedules or natural calamities (floods, landslides etc.), a few changes in the itinerary may happen. We seek your cooperation at these times.

Traveling Expenses

Please plan for the following:

  • Gratuity for drivers, cooks and sherpas on the last day of the journey.
  • Emergency expenses in case of evacuation due to medical emergencies, natural calamities (earthquake, landslide, floods) or change of government rules, etc., towards travel, boarding, lodging and medical costs.
  • Any other personal expenses.

Experiences of Kailash

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

My experience of Kailash with Sacred Treks Nepal is unforgettable. The spiritual journey I took with them made my heart and soul light and peaceful. What I felt at Kailash is beyond words.. it was just magical but what made it more special was the company of the team of Sacred Treks. Though I was travelling alone from home, they took such good care of me which felt like travelling with family.. I look forward to going on more trips with them in future.
